Genoa forty-sixth International Boat Show has ended today
The Show - the number one boat show in the world - was organised by Fiera di Genova S.p.A. and UCINA and officially opened on Saturday 7 October.
According to final projections, the overall number of visitors was 324 thousand. UCINA estimates an extraordinary turnover: 1 billion Euros, i.e. 30-40% of the value of Italy's yearly boat production.
This year's show has been incredibly successful, a real milestone from the viewpoint of international leadership:
1,650 exhibitors took part in it (+7% against 2005 and 36% of them from abroad), displaying
2,200 boats (+9%), 430 of which in the water. Over 60% of the boats on display were below 10 metres in length, while there were 76 pleasure boats between 24 and 43 metres.
As regards the exhibition layout, the New Marina was undoubtedly the main attraction of the Show, together with pavilion C, a real "palace of technologies", this year entirely devoted to accessories.
Genoa 46th International Boat Show has undisputedly drawn the Italian institutions' attention: the opening ceremony was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs
Massimo D'Alema and the Minister for Transport
Alessandro Bianchi. Then, over the following days, the Show was visited by the European Commissioner for Fishing and Maritime Affairs
Joe Borg, the Italian Minister for the Environment
Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, the Minister for Agricultural Policies and Forestry
Paolo De Castro, as well as many other Italian Government representatives and MPs. Among others, the presence of Trade Union CGIL Secretary
Guglielmo Epifani and the Deputy Minister for Transport
Cesare De Piccoli should be mentioned.
Fiera di Genova S.p.A.'s Chairman Paolo Lombardi expressed his deep satisfaction for his company's ability to make the new Marina available for the Boat Show. The marina was indeed completed in record time, thanks to an excellent management of construction works, the result of the constant support and cooperation of all the institutions involved and UCINA. "The New Marina – highlighted Mr Lombardi – will allow us to plan, in cooperation with UCINA, other shows and trade fairs related to the maritime sector that will become an integral part of our official calendar and, together with other planned events, will further promote "excellence" in the local economy and in specific sectors".
"The Boat Show's success – added Mr Lombardi – is a good omen for all Fiera di Genova's forthcoming events. In a few days the fairground will be ready to host the second Technofolies, the trade fair of the amusement parks industry, to be held next 26 through 28 October.
"This 2006 Show – said UCINA's President Anton F. Albertoni – has really been a worldwide success, worth of the Italian boating industry's leadership. UCINA is proud to have "dressed such a wonderful showcase" together with Fiera di Genova, to have made available
larger areas in the water for international manufacturers, and to have hosted a higher number of small producers on land. There is no turning back. We commit ourselves to start working immediately in order to ensure that the 2007 Boat Show will be even better in terms of services, exhibition layout and pathways, so as to confirm today's leadership. In this respect, we deem it crucial to receive guarantees from Fiera di Genova regarding the implementation of its industrial plan, and from the city authorities as far as the improvement of services is concerned".
"Over the last few years – concluded Mr Albertoni – the boating sector has proven it plays a crucial role for the Italian economy, particularly as regards its ability to create profits in related sectors and industries. The interest showed by Government representatives and national politicians in general during the Show confirms this. Our next commitment is to start negotiations aimed at reaching a real Agreement for Development".
The Show is clearly also an important media event. The Press Room accredited 1,300 journalists from thirty-one countries: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Grea Britain, Greece, Ireland Israel, Japan, Malta, Montenegro Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, the United Staes, Sweden, Switzerland,Tunisia, Turkey, and Hungary.
As many as 142 side events took place during the Show, including debates, presentations, demonstrations and sports competitions. 1,800 people participated in the events held at the Sea Theatre and the Sea Stadium, which totalled almost 97 hours overall. The six institutional conferences organised and supported by UCINA were attended by 900 people.
Terre di Mare, Genoa Provincial centre for tourism without barriers, assisted over 600 people having special needs.
The "Welcoming project", implemented in cooperation with Genoa Chamber of Commerce and offering free shuttles and information desks in several hotels, allowed 55,000 people to take advantage of the free connection between the fairground and the main city hotels, the airport, railway stations, and parking areas. The "shopping bus" with a tourist guide onboard was particularly successful: this year, for the first time, an open double-decker was also available. The optical reading "stamps" and bracelets allowing visitors to leave the Show and re-enter it on the same day were used by more than 10,000 people.
Traffic was by and large "bearable", and sea connections were very efficient and successful, also thanks to the favourable weather conditions. More than 30 thousand passengers were carried overall, with an increase in the number of passengers reaching the Show by sea from the parking areas in Pegli. This proves that this type of connection is appreciated by the public and contributes to solving the road traffic problems. For this reason, it could be further developed and increased in the future.
Today's events
A large public attended the presentation of the results of the Delphis Operation, the initiative aiming at protecting whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean, organised by the non-profit organisation Battibaleno and implemented this year for the eleventh time. The operation Manager, Alberto Marco Gattoni, explained: "Delphis is a nautical project which aims at gathering all environmentally-aware pleasure boaters. Our goal is to monitor the situation of the marine fauna in the Sanctuary of Cetaceans and provide useful information tothe scientific community".
During Delphis, which lasts a whole day, the boats (this year there were 342) reach pre-set zones inside the Sanctuary (a 90,000 sq km sea area) to make observations, identify the various species of marine mammals and take pictures of them. »
Delphis's motto is "The greatest luxury is sailing in clean sea"; because well-preserved environment is in itself the true reason why boating exists in the first place.
