La Grande Vela Oceanica non tradisce le attese, e al Salone Nautico di Genova porta in scena uno spettacolo davvero unico per la vela mondiale. I protagonisti della Volvo Ocean Race hanno infatti portato al Teatro del Mare, gremito di pubblico, giornalisti e velisti del calibro di Mauro Pelaschier e Leonardo Ferragamo, le immagini e i racconti più emozionanti dell'ultima edizione della più importante regata intorno al mondo a tappe e in equipaggio. Dopo i saluti di Paolo Lombardi, presidente di Fiera di Genova, e di Anton Francesco Albertoni, presidente di UCINA, la conferenza, organizzata in collaborazione con Yacht Capital e presentata da Matteo Zaccagnino, si è aperta con i racconti e le sensazioni di Richard Brisius, direttore tecnico di Ericsson Racing Team, e Torben Grael, vincitore dell'edizione 2008-2009 a bordo di Ericsson 4.

"La Volvo Ocean Race - racconta il velista brasiliano - è una regata davvero impegnativa. E anche se tutto si decide in mare, la preparazione prima della partenza è davvero fondamentale, e spesso è quella a fare la differenza. Il percorso dell'ultima edizione è stato ancora più difficile, anche se i momenti belli sono stati tanti, con le emozioni iniziate fin dal primo giorno ad Alicante. Il giro del mondo, insieme alle Olimpiadi, è l'esperienza più bella e significativa per chi ama questo sport, per cui non posso che essere orgoglioso di poter prendere parte a entrambe le competizioni."

Dopo Grael e Brisius, è stato il momento di Knut Frostad, direttore generale e responsabile dell’organizzazione del giro del mondo: "Quella del 2008-2009 è stata una regata magnifica, forse la più emozionante di sempre, con le barche di testa sempre vicinissime tra di loro. Con la nuova rotta dell'ultima edizione abbiamo introdotto un nuovo continente, l'Asia, riscontrando un seguito davvero enorme da parte di una nazione come la Cina. Non posso anticipare molto sulla prossima edizione, però a fine settembre renderemo note le nuove regole, e a marzo le nuove tappe. Sicuramente manterremo la classifica a punti, perché permette di creare più concorrenza e di lasciare il risultato finale in bilico fino all'ultimo. E poi, se vinci la Volvo Ocean Race con i punteggi, significa che sei un marinaio più completo, forte sia sulle tratte lunghe, sia sulle regate in-port. Per quanto riguarda il budget, nel 2008 variava da 10 a 30 milioni di euro, a seconda delle ambizioni. Per la prossima edizione cercheremo di fare del nostro meglio per abbassare il budget necessario, così da invogliare più team a iscriversi."

Ma le novità presentate al Salone Nautico Internazionale, riguardano anche, e soprattutto, la vela italiana. Lo Yacht Club Italiano ha infatti ufficializzato la nascita di Italia 70, confermando dunque la propria presenza alla prossima edizione della Volvo Ocean Race. Con un team completamente italiano capitanato da Giovanni Soldini, il velista italiano più esperto di regate oceaniche. Come barca, verrà utilizzata Ericsson 3, già in viaggio verso l'Italia. Le motivazioni di una barca non nuova le ha spiegate Carlo Croce, presidente dello Yacht Club Italiano: "Avevamo pensato anche all'eventualità di partecipare con una barca nuova, però Giovanni preferiva mettere in piedi due sfide: la prima, quella del 2011-2012, sarà più conservativa. Un modo per avere meno pressione addosso, ma anche per poterci concentrare esclusivamente sulla formazione dell'equipaggio e sugli allenamenti. Non vediamo l'ora di metterci in gioco, siamo rimasti fin da subito affascinati dallo spirito e dalla cultura della Volvo Ocean Race."

Per un progetto pronto a decollare, un altro progetto italiano inizia a prendere forma. Lo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda potrebbe infatti partecipare alla prossima Volvo Ocean Race collaborando con alcuni dei velisti più famosi del mondo. Su tutti, il neozelandese Grant Dalton, che ha alle spalle ben 7 giri del mondo e due vittorie: "Per una regata come la Volvo Ocean Race sono fondamentali chimica e cultura. Senza di questi non puoi nemmeno pensare di partecipare a un evento simile. Rispetto a quando ho partecipato io alla Volvo Ocean Race, devo dire che sono cambiate molte cose: soprattutto, oggi, è tutto più professionale. Mi ricordo che un tempo a bordo scorrevano fiumi di vino e birra. Oggi non se ne vede più nemmeno l'ombra."

Le novità portate in scena oggi al Teatro del Mare non si fermano però soltanto alla Volvo Ocean Race. Lo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, oltre al progetto per il giro del mondo, ha infatti lanciato oggi una nuova sfida che porterà la bandiera italiana in acque internazionali con il nome di Azzurra. Riccardo Bonadeo, Commodoro dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, ha presentato oggi il nuovo progetto, annunciando la partecipazione del team Azzurra alle prossime regate del Louis Vuitton Trophy in programma a Nizza dal 7 al 22 novembre 2009. Il nuovo team Azzurra è guidato dal Socio YCCS Giovanni Maspero di Joe Fly, con Francesco Bruni skipper e timoniere, Tommaso Chieffi alla tattica e Alessandra Sensini nel ruolo di team manager.
"Lo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda - precisa Bonadeo - è felice di imbarcarsi in questa avventura con Giovanni Maspero. Del suo team lo YCCS condivide i valori, lo spirito puramente agonistico, la pura passione per la vela, la disposizione alla sfida, la conquista di sempre nuovi obiettivi".

The Great Ocean Sailing did not disappoint expectations and put on stage a really unique event at Genoa Boat Show. The protagonists of the Volvo Ocean Race – the most important round-the-world legged and crewed regatta - shared their most exciting adventures and videos from the race’s latest edition with a huge crowd at the Sea Theatre, in the presence of journalists and outstanding sailors like Mauro Pelaschier and Leonardo Ferragamo. Following the short welcoming speeches by Paolo Lombardi, Fiera di Genova’s Chairman, and Anton Francesco Albertoni, UCINA’s President, the conference – organised in cooperation with Yacht Capital and presented by Matteo Zaccagnino - started off with the tales and feelings that Richard Brisius (Ericsson Racing Team’s Technical Manager) and Torben Grael (the winner of the 2008-2009 edition onboard Ericsson 4) shared with the public.

“The Volvo Ocean Race - said the Brazilian sailor - is a very challenging regatta. And even though everything takes place in the sea, the preparation phase before the start is crucial, and often really makes the difference. The course of the latest edition was even more difficult, but there were many wonderful moments and emotions from the very first day in Alicante. The round-the-world race, together with the Olympic Games, is the most exciting and significant experience for those who love this sport, so I can only be proud of having had the chance to take part in both competitions”.

After Grael and Brisius, Knut Frostad, the CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race, took the floor: “The 2008-2009 regatta was fantastic, perhaps the most exciting ever, with the leading boats always very close to each other. Last edition’s new course included a new continent – Asia –, and the race met with roaring success in China. I cannot anticipate much about next Race, but at the end of October we will announce the new rules, and in March the new legs. We will surely maintain the points scoring system and point standings, as they result in more competition and leave the final result uncertain until the very end. Plus, if you win the Volvo Ocean Race by points it means you are a complete sailor, strong in long legs and in in-port regattas alike. As regards the budget, in 2008 it ranged between 10 and 30 million Euros, depending on one’s ambitions. At next edition we will try to do our best to reduce the budget required, so as to encourage more teams to take part in the race".

The news presented at the International Boat Show also – and mainly - concerned Italian sailing. Indeed, Yacht Club Italiano officially announced the birth of Italia 70, thus confirming its participation in the next Volvo Ocean Race with an all-Italian team led by Giovanni Soldini, the Italian sailor boasting the greatest experience in ocean regattas. The boat will be Ericsson 3, which is already on her way to Italy. The reasons for the decision not to use a new boat were explained by Carlo Croce, the President of Yacht Club Italiano: “We did think about taking part in the race on a new boat, but Giovanni preferred to take up two challenges: the first, the 2011-2012 one, will be more conservative. In this way, we will be subject to less pressure and will also be able to focus only on building the crew and on training. We cannot wait to be part of the game, we were immediately fascinated by the Volvo Ocean Race’s spirit and culture".

As a project is getting ready to start, another Italian project is already taking shape. Yacht Club Costa Smeralda might indeed take part in the next Volvo Ocean Race by cooperating with some of the most famous sailors in the world, above all Kiwi Grant Dalton, who has taken part in as many as 7 round-the-world races and won two: “In a regatta like the Volvo Ocean Race, chemistry and culture are essential. Without them you cannot even think of taking part in a similar event. Compared to the time when I participated in the Volvo Ocean Race, many things have changed: most of all, today everything is more professional. I remember that in the past one could find litres of wine and beer onboard. Now, nothing at all”.

The events held today at the Sea Theatre, however, were not only related to the Volvo Ocean Race. Besides the Ocean Race project, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda also launched a new challenge today, whereby Italian boat Azzurra will be sailing across international waters. Riccardo Bonadeo, the Commodore of Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, presented this new project announcing the Azzurra team’s participation in the next regattas of the Louis Vuitton Trophy, which will be held in Nice from 7 to 22 November 2009. The new Azzurra crew will be led by the YCCS member Giovanni Maspero (Joe Fly team); Francesco Bruni will be the skipper and the helmsman, Tommaso Chieffi the tactician, and Alessandra Sensini the team manager.
“Yacht Club Costa Smeralda – explained Mr Bonadeo – is happy to take up this exciting challenge with Giovanni Maspero, since YCSS shares his team’s values, highly competitive spirit, great passion for sailing and challenges, and the constant setting and achievement of new objectives”.
